Message Board

(April 1) Louise: I totally agree with Nebojsa..we did an excelllllllent job! Our group is so awesome. Anyways, I apologize for not being here to help finish up the orchestrated summary, great work on it though! Thanks!

(March 30) Nebojsa: Good job everyone! excellent work throughout the conference.

(March 24) Brett: Hi All, I have added our 'works cited list' to the anontated bibliography. We now need to add our own account of research.

(March 24) Hela: Hey guys, here is a collaboration page where you can write any questions or concerns for the organizors and they will reply. Please add it into your links. "http://eng11214n.pbwiki.com/"  Thanks.

(March 24th) Louise: Thanks Brett for changing the powerpoint background to the same one as our site, that was a great idea and I like the graphs you added in the beginning. I also added some slides to the powerpoint with the images that Haoli and Brett proposed, I  added the animation for the slides too. I think the last couple of slides have too much writing though...Feel free to add/delete/change the powerpoint however you like! I couldn't figure out how to get the video on the slide though :S.

(March 24th) Brett: Hi All, I have updated the presentation out-line with some ideas. I have also made the master background of the Power presentation the same background of our current pages. So the web-pages and conference presentation pages are the same medium. Hope this is OK ?

(March 22nd) Nebojsa: Hey guys i took the liberty of fixing up our Home page and i also a mock presentation and added the video that we talked about in class - "Digital Whiteboard" . However it's linked to a Wikipage so Louise if you could create a new page to add all that stuff that would be great, thanks!!

(March 20th) Andy: Hey guys, i stopped by, just researching for my job (host). Things are looking really good!! Keep up the good work guys.

(March 20th) Nebojsa: Here are some really interesting links that we can use in our presentation:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=usYFG7ffJHA

(March 20th) Louise: The website is up!!!! (If you turn up the volume you can hear Eye of the Tiger!)  I'm guessing we're going to stick with the group name "Breneloha", but if any of you want to change it, the banner can be easily edited. Also, some of the stuff on the site is messed up but it's nothing big. The "presentation" link up there doesn't lead to anything right now, but when we have a powerpoint presentation made we can add it on. And try not to mess with the page source! Brett, I'm not sure if you've noticed it yet, but the kid in your biography picture is gone! lol.  I hope you guys like the site design!

(March 19th) Hello Everybody. It's Chad, your Technical and Conference Director checking in. I just wanted to see how everyone is doing, and I see your page is coming along nicely. Excellent! If you ever need any help, just call on me. By the way, your liaison is Ashley. She will be contacting you soon. Thanks, and make sure every step is your best step!

(March 18th) Nebojsa: Wow Brett, excellent job on the collaboration page..thanks!!!

(March 17th) Louise: Nebojsa, I couldn't find any of last years conference pages. Do you know where I can find them? See you guys tomorrow at 3!

(March 17th) Nebojsa: Hi Louise, you probably will want to include a link to our powerpoint presentation..i'd advise you to look at some of last years' conference pages and take ideas from there. Oh and what happened to that background you put in a couple of days ago, it was really good! Thanks again

PS. REMEMBER ABOUT OUR MEETING TOMORROW AT 3PM!

(March 17th) Louise: Hey, do you guys have any suggestion for links we can add to the website. So far I've got: Message Board, Biographies, summaries (collaboration page), Annotated bibliographies and Strategies for University (which is just a link back to Erika's page). It'll be easier to add any additional links on now than later. Thanks!

(March 15th) Nebojsa: I found some interesting articles that we can use to supplement our presentation (includes pictures)

i think this article will be really good, it gives data based on field-research..so i think it will be helpfull in backing up our claims when we present in class

(March 10th) Nebojsa: Hi guys could you all send me your biographies asap, i want to upload them onto our site..thanks!!!

 Sat. March 10th: Research Proposals:

Hi all, I am very pleased with your proposals, now I am just waiting on everyone submitting a proposal I can work with in order to select. I will let you know asap.

Brett's Page: English 112 Research Proposal:

I have been googling and have also searched the UBC library data base for inspiration on this vary vast field digital literacy and to my surprise there is so, so many issues/concepts I would love to explore; however, the final concept for my research proposal is: The social and ethical issues of digital literacy ? (Specifically computer literacy)

The abstracts below have inspired me-

Jane Turk, Samuel J. Wiley (Teaching social and ethical issues in the literacy course, 2007) A growing number of colleges and universities educate their computer science majors in social and ethical issues relating to computers. This article presents the case for incorporating consciousness of social and ethical issues of computing into the computer literacy course. The article examines our ethical obligations as professional educators in this area. It notes the focus provided by Computing Curriculum 91 and CSAB on social and ethical issues for majors. It suggests social and ethical issues related to topics in computer competency and describes specific strategies used to incorporate social and ethical issues in a computer literacy course at one university.

Johannes Magenheim and Carsten Schulte (Education and Information Technologies, Social, ethical and technical issues in informatics—An integrated approach, 2006) This paper outlines a didactic approach for computer science courses based on the concept of socio-technical Informatics Systems, demonstrating the linkage between computational issues and their manifold social contexts as well as their close relation to social and ethical issues. The analysis of the product–process relationship of software development as a major element of the construction of Informatics Systems leads to the identification of important criteria for designing computer science courses. The selection of application areas as context types, of educational lenses, of methods and of media enables an integrated teaching approach. This kind of integrated approach offers an holistic approach to technical and societal aspects of an Informatics System in computer science education.

Digital Literacy..Digital literacy is "the ability to understand and use information in multiple formats from a wide range of sources when it is presented via computers"

Your Research Questions:

Louise: Teen Blogs Exposed

Summary of Abstract:

In examining internet blogs(online diaries) of youths aged thirteen to seventeen, David Huffaker (Teen Blogs Exposed: The Private Lives of Teens Made Public, 2006) uses "content analysis [...] to investigate the types of information that teen bloggers present to the internet public". Huffaker discovers that teenagers post a substantial amount of personal information on their blogs such as: "real name, age and location, as well as a variety of ways to contact them". In addition to the personal details, teenagers post almost daily accounts of their lives, including "topics such as school, grades, college" and even "romantic relationships or sexual identities". The blogs also provide the ability to comment back to the owner of the blog and create links to other blogs, ultimately building "social ties and online communities". However, with all the personal information exposed, teenage bloggers are susceptible to the dangers "cyberstalking, sexual predation or cyberbullying".

Preliminary Research Questions:

1. How is being digital literate endangering the lives of youth?

2. Do Digital diaries give the chance for teenagers to present too much information?

3. What is the need for these digital communities created by blogs?

Nebojsa's Proposal:

Conference Proposal

"Digital Literacy through a new form of teaching"

Question: The area of 'Digital Literacy' in education is something that interests me as i have always been interested in seeing how teaching styles have changed with the onset of the new digital era and so i will formulate my first question under these pretences: Is there a new form or structure of teaching with the onset of the 'Digital Era' and if so how has education changed due to this?

With the several links i have researched above the one that seems to interest me the most would come from Teaching and learning in digital environments: The resurgence of resource-based learning. I think it really grasps what i am trying to research and works in answering my question concerning Digital Literacy and the effects it has on the teaching institutions.

Abstract: Janette R. Hill and Michael J. Hannafin (Teaching and learning in the digital environments: The resurgence of the resource-based learning, 2001) organize their article by focussing on the integration of the "Digital Age" into our society. As an outcome to this, we have tended to shift our understandings and learning through settings such as "where we live, work, and learn". A new form of digital education has emerged by way of the institutions that work in incorporating the digital world into our daily lives through education. As the authors mention, "Both the amount of information and access to it have grown exponentially," which help us to understand the new era in which we live, and the need to assimilate into it in order to expand. The article works in establishing several key areas that are needed to be "addressed" in order to "successfully implement resource-based learning environments". The overall anlysis in the article will focus on "the changing nature of resources and perspectives in their use for learning in the digital age" as well as to "describe the overarching structures of resource-based learning environments, and identify key challenges to be addressed."

Research Proposal
What i am interested in researching is the relation between how the onset of the "Digital Era" has worked in developing one's 'Digital Literacy' from adolescent years ,and how, by way of this, the education system has changed incorporating a new form of teaching though the uses of digital technology. In essence, with the emergence of the "Digital Era", what i would like to find out is how teaching has adapted to this emergence and how a new form of understanding and thinking amongst individuals has also changed as a result of this, compared to when the accessiility to the technologies we have today was not present.

Haoli's question

Topic: How does a digital classroom affect students and instructors?

Summary of Abstract: The intervention of computers, wireless internet has changed the traditional structure of a lecture classroom.  The digital lecture has eliminated the shortcomings of overhead projector - context and, promote the quality of class notes by visual image, videos, and the ease of changing the content.  There are benefits to both the students and the instructors by using "digital blackboard."  Students and understand the course material better by the combination of traditional text notes and visualization of examples and graphs, while the instructors can provide more information other than course materials from the Internet to give the students a better understanding of the subject.
